Inital design is the naval architects challenge. This is the phase where errors cost the most. In this stage basic decision are taken that have deep and long term impact not only on the shipbuilding project. Studies show that 70% of the overall costs will be fixed in the first weeks of the design. This applies for succeeding vessels as well. Farsighted shipowners expiriened in newbuildings know that and are willing to spend money in early design stages. This pays back in the long run.
